You can add and remove anchor points in two ways. I mentioned one method in 4, where I demonstrated how to add anchor points with the drawing tools and then remove them by simply selecting them and pressing Backspace (Delete). The techniques covered in this chapter are unlike the methods discussed previously. Instead of adding new points that create an extension to an existing path, you learn how to add points in the middle of existing paths. Instead of deleting points and the line segments connected to them, you learn how to remove points between two anchor points and watch as a new line segment connects those two anchor points.

Assigning Ctrl+Alt+[ or ] (Windows), +Opt+[ or ] (Mac OS) to Rotate Canvas is also a good idea because you may already be used to Ctrl+[ or ] (Windows), +[ or ] (Mac OS) for rotating thumbnails in Bridge. The preceding shortcuts are only suggestions and may not suit you. In which case, just assign the keys you feel most comfortable using. Don t forget to save the changes and to back up the file for good measure if you spend valuable time assigning keys. When you run this program, it shouldn t produce much output if successful. All of its output is devoted to sending instant messages. Computing conventional holographic stereograms is in fact a special case of a more general approach called diffraction-specific computing. lxiiiThis approach applies to forms of computed holography ranging from conventional holographic stereograms to physicallybased interference modeled holograms, and may thus be regarded as a hybrid approach. The diffraction-specific approach considers only the reconstruction step in holography rather than the generation of fringes through simulation of optical interference. It produces a spatially and spectrally sampled treatment of a holographic fringe and therefore of its associated diffracted wavefront. Diffraction-specific fringe computation has the following four features: 1. Spatial discretization: The fringe is treated as a regular array of functional holographic elements (hogels). For example, in HPO holograms, a holo-line is a catenation of evenly spaced hogels with center-to-center spacing w,,, each comprising on the order of hundreds of samples. 2. Spectral discretization: A hogel vector is a sampled spectral representation of a hogel. Each component represents the spectral energy within a small range of spatial frequencies, each distributed throughout the useful spectrum. 3. Basis hinges: Pre-computed basis fringes combine to convert hogel vectors into physically useful fringes. Each basis fringe represents a portion of the fringe spectrum and is precomputed with appropriate sample spacings. 4. Rapid linear superposition: A hogel fringe is computed through the rapid real-valued linear superposition (modulation) of the pre-computed basis fringes, as specified by hogel vectors. Applied to the computation of conventional holographic stereograms, hogel vectors are normalized pixel vectors (as described previously); basis fringes are different for each hogel location, and must
